How Can Mining Appeal More to Green Funds and Non-Traditional Resource Investors?

Can ESG save the mining industry? With many viewing the sector as being significantly undervalued, why hasn’t the necessity for critical minerals broken down the barriers? If the problem is a reputational risk, then how can this be mitigated? If ESG is now being widely adopted by mining companies, why hasn’t money flowed in from non-traditional natural resource investors? What needs to change? Issues discussed include: • What’s still preventing ESG funds from investing in mining? • How does the sector screen on both footprint and handprint solutions • If ESG ratings are the solution to raising money from finance, why is the cost of capital so high? • What ESG questions are end investors / LPs asking institutional investors / GPs before allocating funds? • How can ESG reporting be improved? Avoiding the common mistakes of greenwashing and green hushing • The Economist, which recently proposed that the only bit that really mattered was the "E", and that should stand for "Emissions" – would our panellists agree?
