Environmental & Social Standards for Mines

MMC aims to restore disturbed mine sites to their initial state and prevent or mitigate the negative effects of extractive activities on the environment.

A rehabilitation Plan provides opportunities to improve environmental management strategies throughout a mining cycle.

The development of specific environmental protection and rehabilitation measures aims at managing the closure and post-closure outcomes of the project.

Operations associated with the identified significant environmental aspects of a mine are programmed to be consistent with environmental policies, objectives and targets, to ensure that operations are carried out under specified conditions.

ESIAs make it possible to identify and evaluate projects' potential environmental and social impacts (positive or negative). The ESIA is a decision-making tool for approving a mining project. It is designed to identify the potential risks of a mining project to environmental and human well-being and identify measures to eliminate and/or mitigate these risks. This can be done by replacing and/or modifying planned activities to reduce impacts.

MMC will help facilitate the implementation of the Africa Mining Vision, which aims to ensure the extractives sector can boost social and economic development across the mining communities and villages.

The purpose of the ESMP is to ensure that social and environmental impacts, risks and liabilities identified during the ESIA process are effectively managed during the construction, operation and closure of the proposed project. The process considers and develops adequate measures and controls to minimize and mitigate the potential environmental and social risks and impacts identified during the project implementation.

Mining companies can invest in building schools, hospitals, and other community facilities that benefit the local population. However, mining can also have negative social impacts, including the displacement of communities, loss of land and livelihoods, and health hazards.

Mining safety is a vast term used to describe activities to control and manage operations and events within the industry, responsible for miners' protection by minimizing risks, hazards, and accidents. It is designed to prevent injuries, diseases, and death of personnel and damage or loss of assets and equipment.
